A chainsaw is a portable tool designed for cutting wood. It is equipped with an internal combustion engine that powers the chainsaw. Chainsaws are widely used for tree trimming, forestry, construction work, and other tasks related to wood processing. They are powerful and efficient tools, but they require careful handling and regular maintenance.
When purchasing a chainsaw, especially if it's used, it's important to conduct a thorough inspection, as the tool's condition can affect its safety, effectiveness, and durability.

What should be included:

  1. A tank filled at least one-third for testing purposes.
  2. The presence of a protective cover on the chain part of the saw is welcome but not a mandatory requirement.

How to check a chainsaw:

General inspection

  1. Check the authenticity of the chainsaw.
  2. Check for the presence of a serial number.
  3. Assess the overall condition of the chainsaw.
  4. Evaluate the condition of the saw chain and guide bar.
  5. Ensure that there are no cracks, fractures, or other visible damages on the housing.
  6. Check that all handles, buttons, and regulators are in good condition and securely fastened.
  7. Tilt the saw in different positions - make sure fuel is not leaking.
  8. Ensure that the fuel tank is clean and free from dirt.
  9. Check for damage to the saw chain teeth. Worn teeth can reduce performance.
  10. Inspect the condition of fuel hoses for cracks and leaks.
  11. Locate the fuel suction pump and press it several times to fill it. Usually, this is done three times. If the pump doesn't fill with fuel, it means there's not enough fuel or the pump is faulty. In this case, ask the customer to fill the tank for testing.
  12. If possible, ask for a warranty card if available.

Engine condition

  1. Ensure that the engine is in good condition.
  2. How to start the engine
If we're not confident in our skills using the saw or feel unsure, it's important to ask the client to demonstrate its use and guide us through the next steps
    1. Turn the switch to the "On" position.
    2. Set the saw to the cold start mode using the I and II switches.
    3. Hold the saw firmly with both hands.
    4. Press the throttle trigger, making sure it's not loose.
    5. Slowly pull the starter cord holder, feeling slight resistance.
    6. Pull the starter cord holder quickly and forcefully to start the engine.
    7. If the engine doesn't start on the first attempt, try again.
    8. After the third attempt, switch the saw to the hot start mode using the I and II switches.
    9. If the saw has been idle for a long time, it may not start immediately.
      1. The saw should start within the first 10 attempts.
      2. If the saw starts in fewer than 10 attempts, press the throttle trigger and let it run for 5 seconds.
      3. Turn off the saw and start it again. The second time it should start within the first 5 attempts.
      4. If the saw starts on the second attempt with 4-5 attempts, press the throttle trigger and let it run for 5 seconds.
      5. Turn off the saw and start it again. The third and subsequent times, it should start within the first 3 attempts.
      6. If the saw starts on 1-3 attempts, proceed to the next step.
    10. With the saw running, press the throttle trigger and hold for about 10 seconds.
    11. Listen carefully to the sound. It should be loud and even, without any strange noises.
    12. Check the smoke coming from the engine. It shouldn't be black or dense.
    13. If you hear the saw stuttering or the sound is uneven, or if there's dark or dense smoke - reject acceptance.
    14. Turn the switch to the "Off" position.
  3. How to check throttle response
    1. Start the saw.
    2. Carefully press and release the throttle handle.
    3. Observe how quickly the engine responds to it. This should happen instantly.
  4. How to check the clutch operation
If a new saw costs more than €200, it means it has a clutch, check it
    1. Start the saw.
    2. Without pressing the throttle trigger, watch the saw chain. It shouldn't start rotating.
    3. Press the throttle trigger. After 3 seconds, release it. The saw chain should come to a complete stop within 2 seconds.
    4. If the saw chain doesn't stop or continues to rotate during idle, the clutch is faulty.
  5. How to check the saw brake
    1. Locate the brake lever, which is usually located on the front part of the saw handle.
    2. Switch the brake back and forth, the lever should engage with a small click.
    3. Start the saw.
    4. Press the throttle trigger. After 3 seconds, press the brake lever quickly and firmly. This should cause an immediate stop of the saw chain.
    5. Release the brake lever and press the throttle trigger. The saw should start working instantly without clicks.
After checking the engine, ensure that the saw is stopped and there are no visible fuel or oil leaks.
If something seems strange, it's better to refuse acceptance.
If everything seems fine, you can proceed with the contract.
TIP1: Store the saw with a piece of cardboard or plastic film underneath. During storage, some fuel may leak out - this is normal.
HOIATUS: Kui saag seisab pikka aega kasutamata, muutub bensiin selles paksemaks, mis võib raskendada käivitumist. Müügi korral on oluline selgitada kliendile, et see on normaalne nähtus ja mõnikord võib vaja minna mitu käivitamiskatset. Kuid regulaarsel kasutamisel käivitub saag lihtsalt ja probleemideta.
